The effectiveness of the English Grammar

Intention

Writing

We understand that writing is an essential part of the curriculum; we’re determined about what all children can achieve and strive to create exciting writing opportunities for all children. At Bishop Matthew Norwood Hogh School, we use peers, other classes, and national competitions as an audience. We aim to ensure that all children leave our school with a passion for writing and a high level of English knowledge and skills that they can apply in a variety of subjects and situations.

Implementation

Here we have based our approach on the fact that sentences are stacked together chronologically and organized to engage children with short, intensive moments of learning that they can then immediately apply to their writing.  An individual lesson is based on a sentence model, broken into 3 learning chunks. Each learning chunk has three sections:

  1. Initiate section – a stimulus to capture the children’s imagination and set up a sentence.
  2. Model section – the teacher closely models a sentence that outlines clear writing features and techniques.
  3. Enable section – the children write their sentences, following the model.

Children are challenged to ‘Deepen the Moment’ which requires them to independently draw upon previously learned skills and apply them to their writing during that chunk
